About Me

An avid people & pet photographer, this blog is an easier way to share stories and photos with family and friends that are scattered across the globe. I'm a blonde who finally went back to her natural color after years of being a redhead. I'm in love with photography, reading, movies, live music, history and my Italian Greyhound Dante. Born in Norway, I've been living in SoCal since I was five. {Photo by Nancy Orozco}

Two Years Later

It was the end of November 2007 that I finally ordered my baby, a Canon Rebel XTi, with my soon-to-be-beloved nifty-fifty lens instead of the standard kit lens and a Tamron zoom (was able to do so thanks to a lovely Christmas bonus at my old job). I can't believe it's been more than two years since then, and at the same time it feels like I've been bringing it up to my eye since time immemorial. It was love at first click:

I'd like to think I've improved since then, so I thought I'd share some old photos to help give me motivation in this lifelong learning curve called the pursuit of photography...

Our much loved Puss, may he be playing with the angel kittehs:

A little lackluster, focusing isn't quite right.

Nikki and Katie, Easter 2007:

Hello, weird white balance!

My baby, shortly after we brought him home from the shelter:

He looks brown instead of black, for cry eye!

At Lars' graduation:

Helloooo, overprocessing!

As much as I struggle with feeling like I don't know "enough" or that I'm not getting absolutely everything "perfect" in camera (as compared to having to fix it in Photoshop and Lightroom), I can look back at these and at least recognize that these days I can typically nail my focusing (unless I'm dealing with a running Dante), get exposure nearly spot on, and spend a lot less time cropping and "fixing" on the computer. Plus, thanks to blogging, I now know even seasoned pros have these exact same thoughts and self-doubt can be very common, even if its just for a moment.

Not sure if I have my style totally defined yet, but I'm certainly getting there! I'd like to think it has a sense of humor, nostalgia, and timelessness.

For comparison, here's some current versions of the shots above:

And a recent fave, just because I'm so in love with it:

We currently have jasmine all over the house, which makes me a very happy girl. The jasmine plant has taken over half the patio! It's a monster! I hope it takes it's time flowering, because its my favorite scent on the planet. :)

If you've read this far, thanks for taking the time to listen to my self-empowerment train of thought. ;)

And I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend! I've got a long to-do list, and will be seeing Alice in Wonderland tonight and throwing an Oscar viewing party on Sunday. What are y'all up to?

xo

You are quite the inspiration, young lady. I'll try and keep a personal "self-empowerment train of thought" in my own head!
