An avid people & pet photographer, this blog is an easier way to share stories and photos with family and friends that are scattered across the globe. I'm a blonde who finally went back to her natural color after years of being a redhead. I'm in love with photography, reading, movies, live music, history and my Italian Greyhound Dante. Happy Friday!

Happy Friday everybody! I’m so excited and thankful for all the love and encouragement I’ve received this week, now that Ellingsen Photography is officially open for business! You guys are awesome, for reals.

It’s looking to be a busy weekend for me – tonight my friends and I are heading out to see Richard Cheese, who never fails to disappoint. If you haven’t heard of him before, go check him out now! Soooo fun. Hopefully the rain isn’t too bad – as evidenced above, so far this morning it’s been pretty, but the forecast doesn’t look good. At least it’s not snow, right? :)

I’m downsizing my storage unit tomorrow (luckily the new one is practically right next to the old one), heading to the shelter Sunday to catch up on their new adoptables and then hosting a wee Oscar viewing party Sunday night.

What do you guys have planned? Anything fun?

Adoptables Round I of 2011

Hooray, the first round of adoptables for the year! And they are a ridiculously cute bunch, I must say. Sarah and I headed over there last weekend and spent a lovely afternoon playing/working with some great dogs. (For those of you new to the blog, I volunteer regularly at the Seal Beach Animal Care Center, a no-kill, all-volunteer shelter, taking pictures of their dogs up for adoption.)

Pictured above is Kaya, a super sweet lab mix. What is it about roly poly puppies that they just steal your heart right out from under you?

Beware the head tilt! You can't say no!

Click here for more information on bringing her home.

Then we have Bernie, a standard poodle (?) mix that is super playful and great with other dogs - just look at that smile!

Click here for more info on adopting Bernie.

Next up is Fritz, a Lhasa Apso mix who had been brought to the shelter that day along with two others by a volunteer. He's named after one of our local weathermen (the whole trio was - the others are Dallas and Garth). :) Such a sweetie pie, he just needs a bit of a trim!

Click here for more information on sweet Fritzie.

Then we got to hang out with Heidi, a mellow and happy German Shepherd mix.

All the smarts of a shepherd but in a smaller package - love!

Click here for more info on bringing Heidi home.

Next up is Lucky, a cocker spaniel who came from a not-so-great home, but was nothing but relaxed and sweet with Sarah and I. He just didn't want to leave the bench! :)

Click here for more information on adopting Lucky.

We spent some time with Phoebe, a sweet and cuddly chihuahua. A little shy, but nothing some TLC won't cure!

Click here for more details on adopting Phoebe.

And then there was Prancer, a boxer mix puppy who has the coolest brindle coat I've ever seen and already knows how to sit and stay! Someone did an awful chop job on his ears, but he doesn't seem to let it affect him.

Click here for more info on Prancer.

Skip the cattle dog absolutely charmed me with those gold eyes. And check out that pretty coat! He just needs some fat put back on his bones. He's another one who loves leaning against you - be still my heart!

Click here for more info on Skip.

Next up is Spirit, another female German Shepherd mix. She was super shy, but I get the feeling she'll be fiercely loyal to whomever takes her home. And that coat is as soft as it looks. :)

Click here for the full details on Spirit.

And then there was Victor, a super cute chihuahua (maybe he qualifies for teacup status?). I didn't get too many shots because by then it was nearing sunset and he was too cold to stay out for too long. But luckily he was more than happy to snuggle with Sarah!

Click here for info on how to bring Victor home!

So hopefully you guys know of someone looking for a new family member and will recommend they go to SBACC! As Sarah's t-shirt says, "Rescued is my favorite breed." Amen, sistah.

The Weekend

Doesn't Christmas seem like forever ago? Or is it just me?

Last week I hit the ground running, as I'm working on getting my website up (hopefully by the end of the month!) and there's so much more to do than I ever imagined. It's madness! Luckily I get by with a little help from my shutter sister Nancy and Mr. Same Same. Plus, Nancy brought me to a meeting of the local Fast Track Group. Exactly what I needed!

By Friday, I was ready to have a quiet night in. A Lemon Drop martini and a self-manicure, plus catching up on Modern Family and Big Bang Theory made it perfect. :)

New polish color is from SpaRitual's spring 2011 line, called Circle of Life. It's electric blue and I'm in love!

Saturday morning I *forced* mom and Liv to go with me down to South Coast Plaza in pursuit of a new winter coat. We started at Nordstrom Rack and I got super lucky and found the perfect one! Originally retailed for $400, it was marked down to $150 and I had a $50 gift card. I am triumphant! (It's this one, in olive.)

They found some cute things too and we had a lovely leisurely lunch. After a nap once we got home, we made filet mignon a la Elissa for dinner (my auntie's yummy recipe) and watched Gosford Park.

Sunday I let myself sleep in a bit and then headed down to the shelter for some more photos. I've got to give Sarah big props, I couldn't do it without her! And it saves me taking time away from the dedicated volunteers.

Kaya is a ridiculously cute lab/pit mix puppy - you'd better hurry down there if she's what you're looking for! No doubt she'll find a loving home super quick. Who could say no to that head tilt? Turns out she was a Christmas gift to a family that wasn't ready to have a puppy. :(

Mr. Same Same had arrived by the time I got home, so we spent the evening snuggling and catching up on the new Robot Chicken Star Wars. Which was, of course, awesome.

So how was your weekend, dear reader?

Adoptables Round IV

Last Sunday, Sarah and I headed up to the SBACC for a big round of puppy photos. They've had a larger-than-usual influx of adoptables, so we were really excited to see the newbies! We photographed fourteen dogs in two hours - sooo much fun! Love what a team we've become. :)

A few of the pups are wearing sweaters and t-shirts, as it had been pretty cold at night that week. If you have any old dog clothes that your pup hates (coughDantecough) or no longer fits into, please send them to the shelter!

First up are Benny & Vinnie. These guys have become such brothers that the shelter has decided to only put them up for adoption as a pair. And they're quite the pair! If you're looking for dogs who you won't have to worry about when you're at work, this is them. As luck would have it, a volunteer that they LOVE came by right when we were starting to work with them, so he was a good sport and let them take over his lap while I shot away. :)

Next up is Butters, who I really feel should be called Mister Butters. He just has that personality, y'know? :) Very sweet, especially when his favorite volunteer came by to say hi while we were working. The right owner would have a super loyal and loving dog in Butters!

The big ears kill me every time!

Cody's mohawk was awesome, and his fur was so soft! He was a prince to work with, very calm and sweet. Four frames was all it took!

Next is Lori...this sweet mama made me want to snatch her up and make a run for it! She's a labrador mix and her fur is that unique blend of black and brown - you can see the individual different hairs, so gorgeous.

You can just tell she'd be the kind of pet who'd call 911 for you. :) And she already knows sit and stay!

We loved Mabel - those wee ears are too cute! A very distinguished older lady, she just wanted kisses and snuggles.

Maddie wasn't too keen on my camera, which is fine of course, but I still managed to sneak a few frames of her cute face. She's a doxie/min pin mix and loved being in Sarah's lap!

Molly is a great chihuahua mix that was hell-bent on getting back to her roommates so she could play. :) Again with the big ears, they slay me!

Riley looks an awful lot like Butters, but he's a tad bigger and looks like he has more terrier in him. He was super cuddly and sweet. (I know I seem to say that about all of them, but its funny how true it really is!)

Sasha...oh Sasha. This very tall Shepherd mix must have some Great Dane or maybe Rhodesian Ridgeback in her, she's so lanky! Such a sweet, sweet girl, despite being skin and bones - she really reminded me of what Dante was like when I brought him home.

As it turns out, her tickle spot is her chest - we cracked up when she started jiggling her back leg in delight!

I wanted to take Taka home with me too! Those little elfish ears and cute little mouth are a killer combo. She's a real sweetie!

It feels weird calling another dog Teddy, but this little Pomeranian mix definitely deserved it with his cute face!

With his big ears and compact body, I'm thinking maybe there's some Corgi in there too? Either way, he's very cuddly and intelligent little guy.

Tommy is a super friendly spaniel mix. He was a little scared of looking directly at my camera, but he allowed my presence as long as I gave him regular belly rubs. :)

So there you have it! If you know of anyone who's looking for a new family member, look no further than the SBACC. Every dog is vaccinated, checked for any problems and constantly loved until they find a permanent home. :) Also, make sure to call ahead before going to see a particular dog, because sometimes the website hasn't yet been updated.

Also, some were asking about status updates on previously posted pups. I'm super happy to share that out of all those I'm photographed, Daisy is the only one who hasn't yet been adopted (which is unbelievable to me, she's such a sweetheart!). I wish I could hug each and every awesome family!!

Adoptables Round III

Last weekend I finally got back out to the shelter to get more pup photos, despite the gloomy wet weather. They have several puppies right now and it was hard to put them back!

First up is Latte, a white lab mix puppy who wound up being my photo of the day. She was just so sweet! Leaned right up on Sarah and put her head in her lap - and stayed there. Too cute. :)

Next up is Pumpkin, a teensy terrier mix who was pretty camera shy. She makes Sarah look huge, she's so wee! :)

Who can resist this face??

Then there's Holly, a cuddly Papillon mix (might be spaniel?). She's only about a year and they just got her so they're treating the infection around her eyes, poor thing.

Those little ears kill me!

It looks like Bracco has already found a family, but I had to share photos anyways because I'm so in love with this sweet dog. Didn't bark at all, and look at that soulful gaze! His legs are so long, I was thinking he must be spaniel crossed with Great Dane or something. ;)

I'm a sucker for super soft, floppy ears. What can I say?

As always, if you or anyone you know is looking for a new four legged family member, look no further than a shelter! These are all such worthy pups. I wish I had an acre and lots more money so I could have my own pack. :)
